BlinkGuard: Digital Identity Security
Opening a bank account, signing a contract or accessing various services can increasingly be done without visiting a physical branch or office. Identity verification, which once involved a face-to-face meeting and checking an identity document, can now be completed using a smartphone or computer camera. However, advances in artificial intelligence are creating new security challenges, as AI-generated images and videos can imitate real people with increasing realism.
Blinking, a company specialising in digital identity verification technologies, is working to address this challenge. With financial support from the Innovation Fund of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union, the company developed BlinkGuard in collaboration with the Faculty of Organizational Sciences at the University of Belgrade. This innovative software helps detect attempts at identity fraud during remote verification.
The need for such a solution emerged from the team's first-hand experience working with businesses moving their services online.
“BlinkGuard grew out of what we do every day: verifying users' identities. We work with regulated industries, including banks, telecommunications companies, insurance providers and gambling operators, helping them move their services from physical locations to online platforms as securely as possible,” explains Iva Zečević of Blinking.
One of the main challenges for the development team was designing a solution capable of detecting fraud attempts involving AI-generated or manipulated content. As these technologies continue to evolve, the aim was to develop software that could address not only existing threats but also new forms of fraud that may emerge in the future.
“The key challenge we faced was developing software capable of resisting AI-based attacks, not only those that exist today but also those involving technologies that are still emerging,” says Zečević.
Beyond developing a new software solution, the project also strengthened the company's capabilities, allowing the team to expand its expertise and improve how it works.
“The Innovation Fund gave us a tremendous boost. Through the project, we established a partnership with colleagues from the Faculty of Organizational Sciences and benefited from academic expertise that made a significant contribution to our engineering team. The project's well-organised structure also facilitated knowledge sharing and accelerated both product development and our company's growth,” Zečević notes.
The development of BlinkGuard marks an important step for Blinking in advancing technologies for secure digital services. At a time when distinguishing authentic footage from digital imitations is becoming increasingly difficult, solutions like this are becoming increasingly important in protecting both users and service providers. Their aim is to enable more reliable identity verification without making the process unnecessarily complicated for users.
