BiomeRoof: Green Solutions for Urban Environments

04.11.2026

The lack of green spaces and the increasingly frequent rise in local temperatures directly affect living conditions in cities and place additional strain on urban infrastructure. In such an environment, the need for sustainable and practical solutions that can be integrated into existing urban areas is becoming increasingly important. In response to these challenges, the team at GreenDecor, based near Obrenovac, developed BiomeRoof, a modular cassette-based green roof system.

BiomeRoof is designed as a system that can be easily adapted to different types of buildings, ranging from residential and commercial properties to public institutions and industrial facilities. Thanks to its modular cassette structure, the elements can be installed quickly and easily, without complex construction interventions, allowing for application on existing buildings as well.

In addition to its visual contribution, this type of green roof offers clear functional benefits. BiomeRoof improves thermal and acoustic insulation, reduces energy consumption for heating and cooling, and contributes to better air quality in the immediate surroundings. The system is designed to be irrigated exclusively by rainwater, while water retention within the cassettes slows runoff and reduces the burden on urban drainage systems. Once installed, the system requires no additional maintenance under urban conditions.

An additional value of this solution lies in its production process. All components of the BiomeRoof system, from the base and substrate to carefully selected plant species, are produced in Serbia. The cassette elements function according to a puzzle-like principle, which simplifies transportation, installation, and, if necessary, the replacement of individual components without disrupting the system as a whole.

The development of the BiomeRoof system builds on the GreenDecor team’s many years of experience in green roofs and green walls, while the transition from an initial concept to a market-ready product was significantly supported by the Innovation Fund and the European Union. This support enabled the upgrading of production capacities, procurement of equipment, and the implementation of necessary testing procedures.

“From the very beginning, it was important for us to develop a product that would be equally applicable in the local context while remaining competitive in broader markets,” emphasizes Dejan Lazić from GreenDecor. “Full control over production and the use of domestic resources has allowed us to ensure consistent quality and system reliability.”

In the context of European goals related to sustainable development and climate change adaptation, BiomeRoof serves as an example of how local innovations can offer solutions to universal urban challenges. Through real-world application and reliance on domestic resources, this system demonstrates that green infrastructure can be functional, sustainable, and economically viable at the same time.
